Ordinations to the Transitional Diaconate 2020

May 21, 2020

Please pray for our three seminarians who will be ordained to the transitional diaconate this June and July.

Seminarians Michael Barbarossa, Val Park, and Kyle Poje have received their Call to Orders from Archbishop Etienne to the Transitional Diaconate. The diaconate ordinations will take place separately, Michael Barbarossa at St. Vincent de Paul in Federal Way on June 13, Val Park at St. James Cathedral on June 20, and Kyle Poje at Our Lady Queen of Heaven in Tacoma on July 4. The ordinations will be closed to the public due to COVID restrictions. For more information, follow @seattlevocations on facebook and Instagram.

The diaconate is the first of three ranks in ordained ministry (deacon, presbyter, and bishop). Men who are preparing for the priesthood are ordained “transitional” deacons the year before they are ordained priests (those not planning to be ordained priests are called “permanent” deacons, and go through a different formation process).

Whether transitional or permanent, the diaconate is a three-fold ministry of word, liturgy, and charity. While we are all called to serve others, the Order of Deacons is a permanent and public ministry of the Church—a living example of service to others.

“This is at the very heart of the diaconate to which you have been called: to be a servant of the mysteries of Christ and, at one and the same time, to be a servant of your brothers and sisters. That these two dimensions are inseparably joined together in one reality shows the important nature of the ministry which is yours by ordination.” –Saint John Paul II
